In Lyon, France, we visit 10 year old Emilien. His father, a laboratory technician, tests washing machines, and his mother is a professional musician. Viewers see Emilien and his two sisters at both their mother's and father's apartments, at school, playing basketball, swimming, and accompanying their father to his Aikido lesson. Amazingly, there's still time for a fun sing-along with their cousins.

In Beaujolais, meet 9 year old Camille, whose family runs a vineyard and winery. We see the sumptuous school meal prepared by a nearby restaurant, hear students recite Moliere, visit the vineyards and a local bakery, accompany Camille to her riding lesson and join the family celebration of Three Kings Day.

Meet Anya, age 7, who lives in the industrial city Nizhny Novgorod, built hundreds of years ago on the Volga and Oka Rivers. We learn how important education is to Anya and her brother, and what her parents do. Dad works for the local water department and must fix a broken pump. Her mother shops for groceries at a modern-looking store and an open-air market. After school, Anya practices gymnastics, and we see her working out on the parallel bars. Her workout is demanding, and she falters sometimes, but she says she must keep trying in order to improve her skills. While their city apartment is tiny by American standards, there's room for a mini jungle gym in the living room.
Errusia (Rural)

Ten-year-old Nicolai's family owns a farm where everyone pitches in and nothing is purchased if it can be made at home. The village of Retkino is known for its woodworking, and we see local craftspeople making bowls on a lathe and painting them in intricate and colorful designs. Nicolai zips through the village on his little motorcycle, and joins his dad for a soothing "banya" (sauna) before bed.

We meet 10 year old Alex and his family and follow him to school and to swimming lessons. Alex and his brother play computer games, their stepmother and half-sisters follow an exercise tape, and their father makes moose shish kabobs.
Sweden (Rural)

Five-year-old Evelina lives with her brother and parents in Kalmar, Sweden. We visit Evelina's day care, watch her mother as she teaches her class, visit her father as he photographs cell phone cases, and go to Evelina's pony riding lessons and a birthday party.

10-year old James lives with his family in Bath, which has an ancient heritage as an old Roman outpost. The ruins of the baths fed by hot springs still remain. But James also lives a modern life. His family is musical; his father creates scores for television programs and his grandfather is a professional bell ringer. James takes piano, clarinet and recorder lessons, and enjoys the music and activities at his church. Viewers can see the family enjoying dinner and visiting a local street fair, and we learn how religious freedom and democratic policies have attracted people to this country.

Jessica, age 9, lives with her parents, grandmother and two sisters on a large dairy farm in western England. Prince Charles once made a visit there because he owns some of the land where the cows graze. Jessica's school field trip to the beach is shown, and she and her sisters marvel at the two-week old chicks in their barn. Part of their house is 400 years old, but the family enjoys many modern conveniences.
